How to survive the summer holidays when you're going through a breakup or divorce
The final school bell has rang!!!

For many families, the summer holidays bring excitement — days at the beach, family adventures, lazy mornings, ice creams, and creating memories together. But for those of you going through a breakup or divorce, the summer holidays can feel very different.

While others are planning holidays and enjoying family time, you may be wondering how you will get through the weeks ahead.
Perhaps this is the first summer where your children won't be with you every day.
Perhaps co-parenting arrangements feel complicated.
Perhaps you are trying to make the holidays special while carrying sadness, uncertainty, and exhaustion behind the scenes.

If this is where you are right now, I want you to know one thing:

You are not alone..

When Summer Highlights Everything That Has Changed

The school holidays have a way of shining a spotlight on what feels different.

The routines disappear.

The school runs stop.
The busy mornings that once filled your days suddenly become quiet.
Then when you are going through separation or divorce, that quiet can feel incredibly loud.

You may find yourself thinking:

How am I going to get through these next few weeks?"*
Will my children still feel close to me?"*
How do I create happy memories when my heart is hurting?"*

These are questions many parents carry silently.

I've Been There — I Understand the Pain Behind the Smile

I don't just write this as a Breakup & Divorce Coach.

I write this as someone who has lived through it.

I know what it feels like to wave goodbye as your children leave with the other parent.
I know what it feels like to walk back into a quiet house and feel the emptiness.
I know the questions that race through your mind.
Are they okay?"*
Do they miss me?"*
Am I doing enough?"*

I know the pressure of trying to stay strong for your children while privately trying to put yourself back together.
It is one of the hardest experiences a parent can face.

The Heartache of Missing Your Child When They Are Not With You.

There is another pain that many separated parents struggle with but rarely talk about.
The pain of hardly hearing from your child. Sometimes children can feel caught in the middle. They may worry about upsetting one parent by contacting the other. They may feel confused, guilty, or unsure about what to do.

As a parent, that silence can hurt deeply.
You may find yourself checking your phone, hoping for a message.

Waiting for a simple:

Hi Mum
Hi Dad
I love you.

But please remember this:

Your child's silence is not a reflection of how much they love you.
Children often carry emotions they don't know how to express.
What matters most is that they know your love is steady, unconditional, and always there.
They do not need you to compete.
They do not need you to prove your love.
They simply need to know:
I am here. I love you.
You never have to choose.

Why the Summer Holidays Can Feel Emotionally Overwhelming

AWithout the normal school routine, emotions can feel stronger.

You may experience:

loneliness when your children are away
guilt about not creating the same family life you once imagined
anxiety about co-parenting arrangements
sadness when traditions change
worry about how your children are coping
exhaustion from trying to keep everything together

Please know that these feelings are normal.
Healing does not mean you never feel sad.
It means you learn how to move through those feelings without losing yourself.

Your Children Don't Need a Perfect Summer — They Need You

Many parents put enormous pressure on themselves after separation.

They worry:

I need to make this summer amazing
I need to make up for what has happened.
I need to give my children everything.

But your children don't measure love by expensive holidays or big experiences.

They remember connection.
They remember:
laughing together
bedtime stories
walks and adventures
your attention
your hugs
feeling safe and loved

The greatest gift you can give your child is not perfection.
It is your presence.

Creating New Memories When Life Looks Different

It can be painful accepting that family life may not look the way you imagined.
But different doesn't always mean worse.
Sometimes new beginnings create beautiful new traditions.

Try creating simple moments such as:

🌻 A picnic in the park
🌻 A movie night at home
🌻 Baking together
🌻 A summer memory jar
🌻 Exploring somewhere new
🌻 A special weekly tradition that belongs just to you and your children

The smallest moments often become the memories children treasure most. When family life is split between two homes, children benefit most from emotional stability, not emotional pressure.

Practical Tips to Make the Summer Easier

One of the hardest parts of co-parenting is learning not to react to everything you hear second-hand or indirectly.

There is a natural instinct to defend, correct, or challenge.
But in practice, escalation rarely creates clarity for a child.
What creates clarity is emotional steadiness.
Not withdrawing.
Not reacting impulsively.

Structure hels children fell secure - and it helps you fell more gounrded too.

Plan for the Days You are Apart .....................................................................................................................................................................................................   Days without your children can be incredibly difficult. Try not to let those days become only about waiting for them to return. Create a plan for yourself.  Meet a friend. Go for a walk. Start a new hobby. Read. Exercise. Rest.  Do something that reconnects you with who you are.

Be Gentle With Yourself

Some days you may feel strong.

Other days you may cry.
Both are okay.
Healing is not a straight line.

Give yourself the same kindness you would give a close friend.

Protect Your Emotional Wellbeing

If social media makes you feel worse, step away.
If certain conversations drain you, create boundaries.
Your mental health matters.

Co-Parenting Through the Summer Holidays

Co-parenting can bring challenges, especially during school holidays.

Where possible:

keep communication calm
focus on your child's needs
avoid putting children in the middle
allow them to love both parents
keep adult emotions away from them

Children thrive when they feel emotionally safe.

This Summer Could Become a Turning Point

Right now, you may only see what has been lost.
But slowly, you can begin to see what you are creating.

Ask yourself:

✨ What new memories do I want to build?
✨ What would make today feel a little lighter?
✨ What part of myself do I want to rediscover?

Sometimes the hardest seasons reveal the strongest parts of us.k on this text to edit it.
